Kelsey’s shoulders slumped and her expression crumpled. “Who would poison the food?”

Trace’s hand shook. The reality slammed into his chest like the jolt of an AED.

He could have lost Kelsey for good.

She wasn’t just someone to protect. He cared about her, and she was a friend who managed to point out the good in people and their potential.

She’d done it with him too. The way her eyes had lit up when she’d complimented his loyalty.

He’d stand up for the people in his life and those he invested in any day.

Just like with young Sam. That fight between Sam’s mom and dad haunted him in more ways than one—reminding him of his parents’ failures and his failure to protect his own wife. Yet Kelsey’s encouragement made him want to do better.

She bolstered his strength in ways others didn’t. Maybe she’d had the same effect on Gerald and he had wanted to sincerely apologize the other night.

But if not him, then who would want to hurt her so badly? Even to kill her?

“So, the seizure?” She motioned for him to continue.

“Right.” He combed his fingers through his hair. “Induced by rat poison.”

“Where would someone get rat poison?” She covered her mouth.

“Any garden or do-it center. But who would use it on you and what their motive could be is a different story.” One that set Trace on edge. “Come on. Let’s go.”

The cold air froze his face the moment he stepped outside. Trace put his hands in his jacket pockets.

“The police are going to open an investigation, right?” Kelsey zipped up her coat.

“I’ll make sure of it.” He hit the button on his key fob and the engine spurred to life. Trace wanted her thoughts on the best plan for a protection detail.

It would have been Kelsey writhing on the floor if the food hadn’t been swapped.

But he wasn’t about to make her stand out in the cold to discuss details. “Let’s sit where it’s warm.”

He guided her with his hand on the small of her back and opened the door. Once she’d climbed in, he made his way to the driver’s side.

“How’s Natalie doing?” She’d have a more recent report on her friend than the bits of information he’d gotten from Macon.

“Still weak and nauseous, but she’s at home, according to what was shared in the group message.” Kelsey cleared her throat. “All things considered, she’s doing okay and resting.”

“I’m glad.” Trace had seen enough calls for poison or overdose to know the outcome could’ve been extremely different. Especially when the amount ingested was unknown. The risk for complications became greater.

With a push of his feet against the floor mat, Trace turned in his seat. “You don’t know who could have mixed in the poison in the Backdraft order?”

“I keep going over all of it in my head. Why it happened to Natalie instead. Somehow, I brought the trouble with me, but it hurt her.”

The way she picked at her nail made him want to take her hands in his and ease her worries.
